United Flight Kicks Off Passengers Who Paid Least for Tickets

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

We love Tuesdays. Why, you ask? Because the day brings many travel tips and quips as “Travel Tuesday” on Twitter, and we’re going to share our favorite with you. Got an avid travel twitterer we should follow? Let us know.

What happens when a small United Airlines flight from Burlington, Virginia to Washington DC oversell its cargo capacity and ends up with weight problem? Well, when this exact thing happened today for @brucepoontip’s flight, the gate agents announce that the passengers who paid the least for the flight will be removed.

How unfair! But even more—how embarrassing, to be punished for scoring a deal perhaps months in advance when someone who paid top dollar the day before gets to remain on the plane and you’re stuck back in the terminal, without a guaranteed flight for another two days and no hotel allowance from the airline.

You May Fly on ‘My WINGS’ During Your Next Trip to Germany

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

If you’ve booked your transatlantic flight to Europe already and are still thinking about which low cost carrier to use to get around, we’ve got another one to add to the mix. Joining the crowded field is My WINGS—they seem to enjoy capitalization. The airline will be based in Germany at Friedrichshafen Airport. They’ll be fighting it out for market share with other cheap carriers like Germanwings and Iceland Express; however, My WINGS won’t be going to any similar destinations so they should get a good headstart.

Rome, London, and Alicante are just a few of the destinations that they plan to visit when things start up next month. As of now the airline is looking to fill up the tanks and stuff the cabin full of passengers beginning August 11. We’re eager to see what their livery looks like plastered against the MD-87 aircraft that they plan to use.

Austin: JetBlue May Add a ‘Nerd Bird’ Between San Jose and Austin This Year

Monday, July 12th, 2010

The head honcho at JetBlue—CEO David Barger—has been completing layovers at each and every of his airline’s destinations in celebration of the airline’s first decade in business. There’s probably a lot of hand shaking and airport tours taking place at most, but it looks like those at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport got a little extra information.

Last week during his visit to Texas, JetBlue’s CEO mentioned that the airline might be looking at new routes from Austin in the near future. Specifically Washington and Cancun were mentioned, so if you need still need to plan that winter vacation you might want to watch for an official announcement.

Five Defunct Airlines and Their Best Vintage Sales

Monday, July 12th, 2010

We’re always on the lookout for the next airfare sale, but sometimes it’s nice to remember the good old, cheaper days. You won’t be able to use any of our latest finds to help you get anywhere, but hopefully it will be a nice stroll down memory lane. Here’s five of our picks for defunct airlines and their vintage sales.

· Trans World Airlines:
The airline better known as TWA was swallowed up by American Airlines in 2001, but before their disappearance they were trying to get butts in the seats to raise some cash. Back in April of 2000 they wanted passengers to beat the winter blues by taking advantage of cheaper fares to the US, Canada, Caribbean, and Europe. For those looking for a classier escape, St. Louis to Paris was $698 roundtrip. New Yorkers could head to Seattle or Los Angeles for just $298, but for $498 we’d rather take a trip to Honolulu. Just remember that all travel must be completed by September 15, 2000.
