Passport and Visa Fee Hikes Hit July 13

Time to send your passport to get those extra pages added in ASAP. Passport fees are going up, and they’re doing it soon, on July 13 to be exact.

These changes come as the US Government looks for ways to deepen its coffers as passport fees subsidize the State Department’s work overseas, including emergency relief for American abroad. Sure, it’s for a good cause, but these higher passport prices mean for a family of four to get passports, it’d cost $640, and that’s a little more than many have stashed in the cookie jar for a rainy day.

The full rundown of passport price hikes:

Raft Up on the River

DSC_0306.jpgWe’re envious of Traveler’s director of editorial marketing Lynn Ackerson — she has friends with sailboats! She sends this dispatch from a recent outing:

Looking for a way to
multiply your summer fun?  Grab
some friends who own sailboats, head for the nearest river or lake and
“raft-up” your boats.

My friends Jim and Yvonne
invited me to experience my first raft-up this past weekend and it was nonstop
fun.  In all, six couples sailed
from Annapolis to Oxford, Maryland for the event and when the last boat glided
gracefully into position we had six beautiful Catalina 470s lashed together and
bobbing in unison like ballet dancers.

Having so many people right
there together meant that you could always find someone to join you for
swimming, kayaking, sunning, crabbing or even a quiet game of cards.  Want to see how the others have
outfitted their boats?  Join an
impromptu tour. Got a question about engines or pumps?  Drop in on the shop talk
conversation.  Need ice or a six-pack?  Jump into a friend’s dinghy
for a quick trip to the closest marina.

Kids Love D.C.

Last year, Rainer Jenss traveled around the world with his wife and two sons, and blogged about his experience here on Intelligent Travel. Now he’s writing a column that focuses on traveling with kids.

Photo: Kites at Washington MonumentLast week, I found myself in the familiar situation of being invited down to National Geographic’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., only this time with my sons Tyler and Stefan. The occasion was a reunion of the National Geographic Kids Hands-On Explorer Challenge winners from the last four years. Since the boys joined the 2009 expedition team in Peru, they qualified as alumni. Of course, they were thrilled at the chance to reconnect with some of the other kids from the trip.  But perhaps the bigger draw was the fact that they’d have the opportunity to further explore a city they’ve come to really enjoy. After all, there’s no shortage of things for kids to discover in this town, and they were anxious to return to a couple of their favorite spots.

There’s a reason why D.C. is such a popular destinations for families from all over the country. The city offers wall-to-wall historic American landmarks and some of the best museums in the country, if not the world. A visit to the Nation’s Capital should certainly include the monuments and memorials, the Smithsonian, and even the National Zoo. Other popular attractions we’ve personally sampled, and would recommend, include The International Spy Museum, the National Archives, and the National Portrait Gallery. Our personal favorites, however, are the Newseum and the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, so if Washington, D.C. is in your plans this summer, you may want to make them a part of your busy itinerary.
