Party on at these cities around the world

All through the night, Bangkok's unsurpassed energy buzzes through the streets, which come alive with night markets, food stalls and a lot of people. The greatest party cities have art, culture and charm, but undergo a complete transformation after dark.

Egyptian Holidays

Considering Egypt as a vacation destination, we had to desert – or maybe outgrow – our oldskool notions about Cleopatra’s neighbourhood. After all , is it incorrect that the bulk of continentals and American recall their grammar school introductions to Egypt and picture pyramids, the Sphinx, hieroglyphics, and stately craft plying the Nile stream. Best From a Decade That Changed the Auto Industry

<< previous image | next image >>

It’s hard to believe just 10 years ago automakers were working double-time to churn out the biggest SUVs consumers could stuff into their garages. Bigger was better, fuel economy be damned. Why worry when gas was less than a buck-and-a-half a gallon and few people knew about, let alone [...]

A Few of My Favorite Posts

Thumbnail image for ga2-great-outdoors-swimming-pig.jpgThis little piggy went swimming was one of Marilyn’s favorite pictures from 2009, and a winner of our Great Outdoors Photo Contest.

A wacky squirrel popped up in Banff, Janelle almost got eaten by a grizzly, I had fun in the Yukon, Chris Elliott interviewed the rapping flight attendant, and Andy Carroll led us on a history treasure hunt with the Here Is Where project. Looking back on Intelligent Travel posts from 2009, I wanted to revisit some of my favorites.

We had lots of excellent entries in the “My City Celebrates” holiday feature, and my favorite is probably the funny one from travel blogger Nick Rowlands, who wrote about Christmas in Cairo. (I follow Nick on Twitter at @pharaonick.) We also got a surprising post from Aysegul Surenkok about celebrating in Istanbul. You can check out all the “My City Celebrates” entries here, from Toulouse to  Bejing to Oslo, part of our “I Heart My City” series that is written by our well-traveled readers.

Speaking of holidays, we had great fun with the many delightful entries in our Peeps in Places photo challenge, where we asked our readers to send us photos of the familiar marshmallow creatures in locations around the world. Thanks for the laughs!

Airlines Choose Alternative Fuels En Masse

A group of 15 airlines have signed agreements with two different fuel producers in the largest move towards alternative jet fuel to date. Up until this announcement there have been plenty of airlines demonstrating the use of alternative jet fuels, but it has mostly been an airline here and another one there. Now there is [...]
