Principalities are small scale nations within nations, regularly on the receiving end of an unfounded identity crisis, many are never quote sure if they are or are not a country, let’s face it, may of us don’t even know what constitutes a country! The truth is it doesn’t really matter, each of these five territories has it’s own unique culture, separate to that of its parent nation and are they are all worth a visit. Whether you go on Holidays in Wales or short breaks to Monaco these mini-destinations prove that good things come in small packages!

 

5. San Marino

Located right in the middle of central Italy, this principality is well known for it’s Formula One race circuit, Imola where the Brilliant Brazilian Driver Ayrton Senna lost his life in 1994

The religious capital of the world, the Vatican also takes the gong for smallest country in the world at just one square meter, it’s a wonder the Pope and his posse can all fit in!

the most glamorous country in the world, Monaco is a haven for the rich and famous looking to relocate due to its tax-exempt status. Monaco is also a motorsports playground hosting the Monte Carlo grand prix and a round of the World Rally championship. Ferocious F1 cars tearing around the narrow twisty streets is truly a sight to behold.

 

2. Andora

A tiny outpost sandwiched between the southern French and northern Spanish boarders, Andorra houses one of the highest altitude European capitals, Andorra la Vella, also a great place to visit hot springs.

The UK, a small country itself, boasts its own principality, although much higher in land-mass, compared to the others in the list, Wales qualifies as a principality because it is ruled by the English government. Short breaks in Wales and Self catering Wales are very popular Google search terms at the moment as Brits look for cheap holidays in this rugged, unspoiled country.
