  • The snow might finally be melting here in D.C., but in Alaska there's plenty, which is good for the contestants in the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which officially kicked off yesterday in Willow, Alaska. Seventy-one mushers and their dog teams will spend the next two weeks traversing Alaska's wilderness, and will finish 1,150 miles later in Nome two weeks from now. To learn more about the race and to follow the sled teams, click here. [Gadling]

  • "Imagine if you could travel and save the world at the same time." That's what one travel booking site wants to do. • Author Susan Jane Gilman picks six great books "that won't insult my intelligence or embarrass me in airports" for NPR's Mile High Book Club. Check out the list here, and if you haven't done so already, read Gilman's Undress Me in the Temple of Heaven, an unbelievably true story (seriously) of traveling through China in the 1980s, and a new addition to my list of favorite travel books.
