World Heritage Street View

Virtual Visit to StonehengeHere at Traveler we hope to inspire our readers to go out and experience the world firsthand. But sometimes you need to really imagine yourself in a place before going there. That's where Google and UNESCO come in: the groups signed an alliance on December 3 that will allow many World Heritage sites to be explored online.

The purpose of the World Heritage program at UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) is to identify, protect and maintain sites around the world deemed to have cultural and natural heritage of outstanding value to humanity. Currently there are 890 locations worldwide which have been awarded a spot on UNESCO's World Heritage list, in 148 different nation-states. UNESCO's partnership with Google provides online access to 19 of these sites, which are located throughout Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom. Some of the highlights include the Palace of Versailles (France), the historic center of Prague (Czech Republic) and the ruins of Stonehenge (England). Click through the jump to see a video tour of some of the sites.
